Barbara (known in our family as Barbie) was my first cousin, although after we moved to California in 1963 and she moved to Florida I hardly ever saw her. Four years ago I answered the phone and wasn't surprised to hear that Barbie's mother's pastor was on the line. Aunt Helen was 98 years old, and I braced myself for the inevitable but expected bad news. When I discovered that it was Barbie who died, not Aunt Helen, I was both surprised and sorry. The circumstnces surrounding her death are unknown to all of us, but we cheer her mother, Aunt Helen, who's about to celebrate her 102nd birthday.
P.S. Last Sunday Aunt Helen told her friends in the Grace Assisted Living Center in Nampa, ID that after breakfast she was going to walk back to Florida. She left the center, walked to the street and fell, losing consciousness. She died two days ago. She'll be joining her daughter Barbie in Florida in a week or two.
I remember Barb. I called her Bertschie. We had fun together with Churchill McKinney. She was so much fun to be around. I was sorry to see she had passed. Gone, but definitely not forgotten.
Barbie was a great friend. We shared so many experiences from learning to drive - and her first car accident - to whatever we were doing in the photo. So many memories; such a sense of loss.
Churchill, I think the hulu was part of some special day - fundraiser - not the Peanuts etc. That is a hazy thought I had. Someone's Mom was directing us and that in itself was a treat! I think there may have also been a Spanish number. I remember a trip that Barbie and Helen and I took to Florida one summer. Mrs. Bertsch had a beautiful new two tone blue Buick Wildcat Convertible and we went to Pampano Beach Florida. That is where Barb ended up living in Florida if I recall correctly. When we were near Cape Canaveral we saw all kinds of cars pulled over and we asked them why they were pulled over. Then we too sat and waited for the launch. I am thinking it was a Mercury launch Helen was always a very put together lady and a class act. So was Barb. It is hard to believe they are both gone. In our hearts but gone.
Barb was my high school girlfriend for at least a year. She was really wonderful and funny. She kept me on my toes. I remember driving out to North College Hill to pick her up and meeting her mom. We would always sit down and talk for a while before Barb and I went out. She is remembered and missed.
Barb and I were friends in high school, sorority sisters in college, and I was in her first wedding. When her mother remarried, I actually dated her step brother for a short period of time. She was a good friend always, and I too was shocked when her family called to tell me of her death.

My very first "crush" at WHHS. Such a beautiful person.

You were doing the hula, apparently; the question is "where"?
