Way to go Larry - retiring at the top of your game!  Tiger should have taken a lesson from you.

Thanks to all for your support.  Yes, Dave, I'll be 72 on Dec 4th. If you recall, I had already been retired from my real job (the one that paid me) for 8 years when I undertook this fun endeavor. In 7 short years, we have moved the boys varsity from perennial last placers to top half of the SW district, created the first ever girls varsity at Walnut and moved them to 7th of 18 teams at sectionals, and of course got Katie to the state finals three times, finally winning one. No Walnut golfers had been to state since 1955 (um, way before even OUR time there).

Yes, Paul, Katie and I are getting rings. Mine will go on top of the TV with my "retirement" coach's trophy.

Laura, it was a super celebration at awards night. Somebody even made me a blanket with my name on it, and a plateful of my fave brownies. Parents gave me a new Ping putter with my name and "Go Eagles" engraved. And a whole photo album of our run through the state tournaments. It was tough for me to stay dry at the end - I've never had a standing "O" before - or been on the evening news either.

Tina and Linda, I hope I can get to Phoenix if Katie indeed plays next year. Save me a lunch date.

Thanks again to all. Hopefully I'll be a more frequent visitor here going forward. Looking forward to 2021! Go Eagles!

Larry, so happy for you and Katie.  You deserve it all and more.  I am grateful that Reid had one year with you and your Walnut Hills spirit!

We are just finishing up an evocative, informative and fun filled month traveling through Northen France and than down the Danube.  Of course accompanied by too much good food (one can never have too much pate smiley), wine and local beer!  I have posted a few images along the way on Instagram   https://www.instagram.com/jwdphotog/

I just watched The Story Of Us, Episode Two. Something close to The search for Peace. Sure enough in the credits there it is "Senior Researcher - Mary Benjamin". The series is terrific both visually, in particular the way it's cut - not a wasted second - every image makes its point and that's it, it moves on. And Morgan Freeman says the exactly perfect words. Really well done!! Looking forward to the next episodes. Thanks Mary Benjamin - a terrific, one-of-a-kind cinematic, historical, and humanist work.

If you are an automotive enthusiast as I am, you might like some of the following images I just put up from SEMA 2017 (the largest trade show of automotive specialty equipment manufacturers).  The first link is to GM Chevrolet's 'booth' (Autoguide/Stingray Forums is a client of mine, hence the focus of this link) and the second link is representative of most everything else at the show.

Once you are in either gallery, you can view them in the 'thumbnail' size, or click on the image and it will enlarge, and then next to the image in the lower right side, you should see an icon that looks like three frames.  If you click on that, you can look at the image at multiple sizes for details (up to 4k smiley)

Nice photos Jeff. Some really outrageous paint wiork!! I go to car shows - Wildwood NJ has them frequently and there's a classic car meet-up every Wednesday night about 5 minutes away - and am looking at a 1979 Corvette. But I live in an apartment, so no garage. I'll probably have to let it go. 40K miles, a really nice car, but I just can't let myself do it.

Thanks Paul.  Just got back from a Car Enthusiasts Breakfast Club meeting.  Yes, there were both outrageous paint jobs as well as amazing one-off bodies at SEMA.  I'd find it hard to own the Vette without a garage.  Perhaps a remote storage location if you decide to get it (along with a shield to protect your right leg from engine compartment heat wink ).

Steve, I saw that cartoon and laughed out loud.....of course, we all remember that!!

I would like to join the "laughed out loud" response to Steve's conjugal visit cartoon. Seems so long ago, but still a vivid memory.

A few more for fellow automotive enthusiasts.  These are from the Mecum Inagural Auction in Las Vegas this week.  Over a 1,000 cars, trucks etc.

And Laura, for some of us, the Latin in the cartoon is just about all we remember (except for "Veni, vidi, vici," "E pluribus unum," "Britannia est parva insula," and maybe "Alea jacta est").  I can't even say "All Gaul is divided into three parts" (was that the Gaul bladder, the sacred Iliac, and the duodenum -- which surely means there are two of them?) in Latin any more.

So, Jeff, which car did you buy?

Oh Phil, you’ve got to remember “sursum ad summum”

Stephen (Steve) Dixon

The phrase I remember most from Latin class is...

"Steve, why don't you translate the next paragraph?"  <Gulp!>

Doug Gordon

"Omnia Gallia in tres partes divisa est." Is that about right? All I remember about 9th-grade Latin is just trying to get through it to be done with it all, so even though I translated enough Caesar, I never thought about the content at all. So recently, after hearing an interesting podcast about the Gallic Wars (Dan Carlin's "Hardcore History," in case there are any other fans), I managed to get a recent translation of the whole saga from our library. Pretty interesting stuff actually, but frankly I'd side with the Gauls if given a choice. At one point, Caesar says something to the effect that the Gauls fight so fiercely because "they are fighting for their freedom and to not to be ruled by the Romans." Yeah, I can see their motivation!

"Neque enim potest exercitum is continere imperator qui se ipsum non continet, neque severus esse in iudicando qui alios in se severos esse iudices non vult."     Thanks to Mrs Renfro for making us memorize these lines of Cicero in 10th grade Latin class.  They have turned out to be especially poignant and relevant to our own times.   Translation:  "Neither can a leader control his army  if he can't control himself, nor be strict in judgment if he doesn't want other judges to be strict with himself."

we

We adopted this cutie from a rescue.  He’s a 6 year old Shih Tzu.  We haven’t had a dog for many years as our previous condo didn’t allow.  So far (5 days) he is working out very well.  Our elderly cat is decidedly NOT amused!

Susan,

Congratulations! My mantra is, "Don't Shop! Adopt!". I'm sure the cat will come around.

A new study out of Sweden suggests dog owners live longer. I don't know if it's true, but I have had dogs all of my life and I'm still here!  But, if that's not the case, I also agree with Will Rogers who said, "If there are no dogs in Heaven, I want to go where they went."

Everyone have a great Thanksgiving!

Tina Preuninger (Hisrich)

Happy thanksgiving all wherever you may be celebrating and with whatever your meal is made!

Susan....the dog is very cute.  He’ll be a great companion I’m sure.  How are you doing in strength department?

Ann....best thoughts of the day from Will Rogers!

Jeff.....what is your mpg for your sports car?

Dale......great quote.  I don’t recall it but wish I did!  Thanks.

Hi Tina,

A most thankful Thanksgiving as well!

The true average mpg on my Corvette since I picked it up at the factory 4 years ago this coming October is an astounding 24 mpg!  It typically gets 30 to 32 mpg when crusing at the highest posted (or a titch more...) legal limits on highways, and 20's around town.  The cummulative 24 mpg includes many many enthusiatic drives, high speed runs on tracks, etc.  Amazing efficiency from a 460 hp engine smiley  Part of that comes from the fact it automatically drops down from 8 cylinders to 4 cylinders when cruising or not requiring passing power.

Ciao,

Jeff

Gail, Jadyne, and I returned yesterday after a twelve day hiking and sightseeing trip to Japan.  Here are these two lovely ladies in their Yukatas.

For those who wish to see more of what we saw I've put several images from the trip on my web site:
