Al was a good friend while we were at WHHS.  He was definitely a progressive thinker and his own man.  He was a bright and funny guy. Though we lost touch after graduation, we reconnected after our 10th reunion and saw each other several times over the years in various locales around the country.  He was a politcally aware person who today would be called "woke" by certain people.  He was a kind and caring person.

Al was a thoughtful and perceptive classmate, whom I came to appreciate after graduation.   While others were fighting the draft, Al had an unfortunate misadventure with a malign and ill-advised law that cost him a couple of wasted years.  Happily he recovered without lasting damage and went on to have a productive teaching career at U.Ky.  He wrote a fascinating account of his experiences which was both vivid and compelling,  but  to my knowledge never completed for publication.    In later years, we good-humoredly commiserated about his misadventures and discussed our mutual friends and interest in German genealogy.    Here is a photo of Al the last time I saw him, in a Thai restaurant in Boston in 2016.

There is a vulgar term for a certain type of smile: shit-eating grin.   The last time I was with Al was in 1967 or thereabouts.  When we parted, he flashed that grin.  That's how I'll always remember him.

On Facebook, his IS the first name on my list. I was just thinking that I hadn't heard from him in a long time.
Back prior to social media, SMS messaging on our phones, and chat "e-messages" on our computers with CRT monitors, Al and I used to converse by AOL email. We didn't talk about anything in particular that I can recall, but I always enjoyed hearing from him. May he rest in peace.
