Vivid memory from our "When I'm 64" Reunion: I had just read the list of our deceased classmates, and Sam Engel was included on this list. I was standing outside at the front of David and Betsy Schneider's home, on our Friday night event, when I saw Sam Engel walking toward me on their driveway. I must have looked stunned, as Sam asked me what was the matter. I stammered, "I thought that you were dead." He chuckled and said that he was always a good actor!  I remember Sam as a character actor extraordinaire.

Sam's email address was SamActor.something.  We corresponded during the early 2000s through email for several years, but hadn't seen each other since occasionally bumping into each other downtown. He must haves worked close to where I worked.  Anyway, in 2003, we chatted on line about his acting, and he told me how excited he was about the local, Wyoming Players production of State Fair. I didn't  hear from him for a couple of weeks. When I heard from him again, he told me that he had been in the hospital for a stroke. In spite of it, he still planned to be in the play.

Raquel Dowdy-Cornute and I surprised him by attending the performance.  He was a wonderful Judge Heppenstahl in the pie contest, wheelchair and all.

Sam and I got together for lunch a couple of times in the early 2000s.  And I visited him at home as well.  Sam and I went through his Remembrancers from our Effie year through our Senior year reminiscing about students, teachers, regaling each other with anecdotes while we went through every page of each book.  I kept in contact with him via email or phone for several years.  He was a good and funny guy.
