Jonathan Marks

I've been off the site while you all have been discussing matters of pith and moment, but from the experience of jumping back in I've come up with one important thing to say:

What a pleasure to hear from the former Hank Cohen!!!

The filler is on the side where the little arrow is pointing on the indicator lights on the light cluster. I thought everyone with a newer than twenty year old car knew that.

Ann, that is correct except that Henry specifically said without looking outside of the car or inside at the dash etc.

Jon Marks, good to hear from you my former chief Editor along with Frannie G. As of yet no one has come up with the correct answer on the filler door side, keep trying!! Now for my political comment of the day: Does anyone see the similarities between The Donald and Bagdad Bob?

I believe the answer that Henry is looking for is that the gas filler is usually on the opposite side from the exhaust pipe at the rear.

However my 1969 Roadrunner had the gas filler behine the license plate at the center of the rear bumper. (It was a terrible design as the gas would leak out from the filler past the gas cap upon sufficient acceleration. I am pretty sure that dont do that any more).

Again, those interested in poliitical discussions regarding the current calamity, are welcome to join the discussion group by email just email me at:  my name at yahoo dot com

Bruce, you got it. In most cars it is on the opposite side of the exhaust. When there are two exhausts usually it is on the driver's side. There is a principle in psychology called perceptual vigilance, my guess is a good portion of you will now pay attention to checking this phenomenon since it was pointed out to you and because the skeptics among you will want proof.

Henry, what a gas!  Tanks for the information.

Brain teaser's 100% failsafe method.  Drive around your neighborhood to look for a car that is the same make and model as yours. Tail the owner until they stop for gas. See which side of the car they stick the hose in.

Jerry, very practical advice, also a formula for attracting accusations of stalking. Now for all of you, your next brainteaser: how many randomly selected people do you need to have in a room ( no twins allowed) so that there is a 50/50 chance that two will have the same birthday? (not year just month and date)

Is there anyone out there who thought our pardon the expression President handled himself in last week's presser in a statesmanlike, professional, cogent, rationale fashion?

Gail Weintraub (Stern)

I assume that I am like many of you who read the Message Forum and choose not to post. However, over the past month, there have been posts that I know have been offensive to a number of classmates.

While reviewing the videos from our 70th Birthday Reunion (which will soon be posted on this website), I was struck by one comment made during our class 'Talk Around'. Reflecting on our reunion, Peter Crockett mentioned how welcoming everyone was. He spoke of "the kindness when we greet each other."

We may have different political beliefs, but we remain friends. We have lived in different places across this vast country/world, and we have had different life experiences. We see things differently which is healthy. Yet, our written words can be offensive to classmates who do not share our particular point of view. I believe that some of what has been posted to all classmates would never be said if face to face. Words are powerful.

When posting, please think of ALL of our classmates. Let's continue to create a Message Forum environment that fosters inclusiveness and is in keeping with the spirit of our class reunions.

Sursum ad Summum.

To respond to Gail...it has been tempting, and I've been guilty, of using the Message Forum to express the overall dismay and disappointment that I have felt since November.  Richard, Gene, and others have cautioned us about allowing our political preferences seep into this site, which has been previously inclusive and welcoming.  Margery was the first to express a point of view that from my myopic California insular existence, was largely unfamiliar to me, but I have no doubt that there must be others who feel the same way but have been reluctant to express themselves as forcefully as she did.  I rant and rave on Facebook.  I reply in personal messages to friends such as Mike Hunting, with whom I have strong political disagreements.  It's been suggested that there are better ways to air and share our grievances than the message forum.

By invitation, I have recently joined an ongoing email political discussion group involving a number of our classmates.  It's a good forum.  It's becoming clear that this Message Forum isn't a good forum for political discussion, for the reasons that Gail S. and David B. have just expressed very well and very clearly.  I have reason to believe that we may well lose our website if what are appearing to be deliberate provocations don't cease and desist.  We're all grownups here.  Let's exercise some common sense.

Steve, I'm good with that. That said, the comments I made were never directed at any classmate person, they were to try to characterize what is coming out of Washington which by any rational standard falls well short of the expectations that the people of this country regardless of affiliation should be looking for and deserve. No more "can you believe that" statements from me.

Thanks, Hank.  I think that the Message Forum was a legitimate venue for catalyzing important expression.  Some things need to be said.  We'll continue our multilateral conversations . . . but elsewhere.  Let's all remain the friends that we've become, largely thanks to this website.  For that, Gail and Richard, eternal and heartfelt gratitude.

Henry, my cars are clearly the exception to your solution.  For example, the Caddy has duel rear exhausts (located at both sides of the rear valence), and the filler is on the passenger side.  The Corvette has quad exhausts centrally located in the rear and its filler is on the driver side. smiley

Two exhausts but the gas filler is on the passenger side.

However, on a more somber note, I've tried, unsuccessfully this afternoon, to verify some sad news.  I was shopping for a new washer today, and was in Sears.  I asked the saleman for a card so I could get back to him with some questions.  He gave me his card.  His name is Ben.  I told him that I had a classmate who had worked at Sears for many years and that his name is also Ben. The salesman said, "Yes. I know Ben, Ben Burton.  He passed away last week.  He had been in hospice." After exchanging a few pleasantries, I left.

I have looked at the Cincinnati Enquirer obituaries and cannot find anything.  I had been unable to contact Ben or his wife for the LXX last year.   We all knew that he had been in poor health.  A friend of mine said she saw him a while ago.  He recognized her and chatted.  Afterwards, his wife told her that she was surprised he knew her because he was having memory problems.

I will continue to try to get further information.

Thank you Gail.  Our Message Forum is not the platform for sharing our political views.  Sursum ad Summum indeed.

I've driven Volvos for many years.  At first the gas filler was on the driver side which was very convenient.  Then they switched it to the passenger side.  Since I didn't like it that way I asked why the change was made.  I was told it was for safety reasons.   If you have to pull over to the side of the road for gas reasons, it is much safer being on the passenger side and not a possible target for oncoming traffic.

Do they still sell Neapolitan ice cream in your town?  If vanilla, chocolate, and strawberry were the only flavors of ice cream, which one would you choose?

Thanks Gail.  Although I do not post much, I agree we need to stay positive on this message forum!

Thank you Gail for your kind request as well as Richard, Gene, and others who have weighed in on this.  We want to keep a more positive outlook!😀😊

Well said. Well received. Love my family and friends, including classmates! Some things can be fixed - some cannot be changed, such as most of our 70 year old well tuned minds.
