Beautiful pictures Dave.

I'm with Ann. Although I put candid pictures of family get-togethers as my chief joy, a really close second is nature pictures. Actually, they make me dizzy-drunk. I always told people that I had no need to smoke weed to get high - all I need is a really well-composed picture of a flower and I'm off sailing into the sublime....

The first time I was in Israel with a group of kids who had just finished high school or one year of college, we went on a trip to the north in the beginning of spring. We were hiking and stopped for a rest. I plopped down near a bunch of "kalaniot" (I think that is poppy in English?), and I lay down and just stared at one flower face-to-face, inches apart, and then had the sense to take a picture at that close range. It was one of my favorite from that year in Israel when I was 19-20, which decided the rest of my life. I give a lot of credit to that flower....

Hey, Stephen - Can I come to visit you and Pam? And will you put a bed on your deck for me to live on?

Thanks,, Ann and Judy, my biggest (only?) fans!

No David.  No, no, no.  I Iove your photos.  Seeing what you did with Hank's photo made it even more fabulous - but you did need his original photo to get it done!  All of yours are beautiful and a pleasure just to sit back and watch.  Keep them coming.

David, I am certain that you have many admirers who enjoy your photography and do not weigh in. I am one of them! Gail

Me too!

Not to compete with Judy, but I thought you guys might want to know the breaking news from Utah:

I thought you guys might want to know the breaking news stories in Utah this a.m.:

1)  The Cobra, a climbing formation in Fischer Towers, fell over  http://unofficialnetworks.com/2014/08/sad-news-from-moab-the-tower-known-as-the-cobra-has-fallen-before-and-after-photo

Yes, I have climbed it, no I did not think it was a good idea after I got up there.

2) The star running back for BYU is suspended for an "honor code" violation.  I suspect he was involved in heavy petting with his girlfriend.  This is a recurring theme at BYU.  I don't know what is wrong with those guys!

3)  Some kid fell off the waterfall in Bell's Canyon, again.  I think this is about the 100th time someone has fallen off it this summer.

4) Conspicuous by it's absence :
       a)  No polygamy stories today.
       b) No demonstrations in downtown Salt Lake City against the teaching of contraception in High Schools and for the      teaching of abstinence (It works just as well now as when we were young).

I will keep you informed of any developments in these stories.  (I don't expect any developments in the Fischer Towers story).

Ann and Ira - What can I say?  Just like the guys in the movies, "I like to watch!".

That said, I was in attendance only because I had other "business" at the school that day (and Ira stopped by for lunch on the way in from Louisville).  I was merely awaiting my turn with the shovel, and everybody knows how I love to throw dirt!

By way of an update on the new field, there are now buildings on site and the actual turf should be in place this month.  We may have soccer games in September.

Larry, since you are our classmate in the know about all things WHHS sports related, would you please post a photo or two of the new field once it is completed? And, please keep us informed of your golf teams. It is exciting that there is a women's/girls' golf team for the first time ever this season. Go Eagles!

Linda Karpen (Nachman)

Not a favorite movie, but a recent play at The Old Globe Theatre in San Diego. My brother's (whhs '68) daughter, Claire Karpen, performed one of the lead roles. Please scroll down to see the program's "Original Broadway Production" credits. Rick and Fred still rock!!!

Still in the North Georgia mountains (until tomorrow). We finally got a day without the threat of thunderstorms and could take a hike up Rabun Bald. No bald jokes, please!

Pam, on Rabun Bald, photographed by someone with a steadier hand.

Not actually a night shot, although it looks like one. Still on Rabun Bald but in the dense woods.

Gail, etal - yes, it would have been exciting for the first girl's golf team.  Four defections in July nixed that idea.  I guess the other girls didn't want to be embarrased by frosh Katie Hallinan, who is #1 so far in the BOYS tryouts with a 35 Friday.  Bad news for the girls team, GREAT news for the boys team.  I've picked us to finish 2nd or 3rd in the ECC this year, up from last the last several years.

As to photos of the new facilities - absolutely!  I may not have the acumen of a DB, but I'll get a good view right from the AD's office window.

BTW, everybody remembers the old Faculty Lounge in the main hall.  It is now the school Conference Room.  Saturday it hosted coach's CPR training.  I passed for about the tenth time in my career, but if somebody has a heart attack in front of me, they'll likely need the AED - for ME!

Larry, good thing you didn't go into the medical profession. We'd be S.O.L.

Philip Spiess

Larry:  I believe that was the Faculty Lounge that smelled of cigarettes and coffee whenever the door opened?

Dave Buchholz:  I suspect we're all fans of your photographs.  I, for one, have not commented, because they leave me speechless!  (And where in New Hampshire was your New Hampshire photo taken?)

Nelson - Those balancing rock formations like the former Cobra, in Utah are fascinating. I had never seen that one but did see Charlie Brown in Sedona.

Dave- Speaking of FASCINATING, your picture composition in reply 701 is just that. I'm a fall foliage fanatic.

Larry & Ira - you are among WHHS alumni who are keeping our school current and vital for the future. I applaud you.

Linda- Thank you for the picture of your niece's program for the production of Into The Woods and the shout out to Rick et al.  I'm sure you are proud of your niece.

Now for something a little different.  For five years I attended San Francisco's Pride Parade, an LGBT affair that attracts over a million spectators along Market Street.  (I stopped going about four or five years ago when the photographers outnumbered the participants.)  The parade is always led by the Dykes on Bikes, and I'd spend an hour or so before the parade hanging out with them.  If you thought that the Hells Angels were fearsome, you ain't seen nothin'.

Ann, thank you for the fall color compliment.

Phil, three years ago we rented an RV in MA and did the New England fall colors tour.  The RV leaked, then broke down, and all the pretty spots were jammed with people like me.  As we were leaving we found a little camping area in some part of New Hampshsire, and in the morning, on the way out, in the quiet October stillness I saw this, possibly the best photo of the trip. Nice work Buchholz!

Here's another of Pam, reacting to one of my jokes.

David, I  thought that Israeli soldiers were unbelieveably brave running into tunnels to chase terrorists in Gaza, but that was before I saw that you hung out with Dykes on Bikes....... lord preserve us.

And Nelson, you are not stealing any of my exciting vignettes of war, or whatever the hell they are, by that awesome picture of the Cobra.... took my breath away. And I refuse to believe that someone could be so - I dontknowwhat - and actually climb up there, but then I have acrophobia in a pretty bad way....

David:

The two photos you posted of the trees are fantastic.   Clearly you are a very talented photographer.   Keep the photos coming.   And thanks.   Dick

Double good news, everybody.  I have fewer than 36,000 photos left to post!  Second.  I'm going on vacation for a week in mid-August without my photo library.  I'll be happy to leave the message forum in the good and capable hands of people who actually think and have something to say.

That flower is beautiful.  I don't know what it is - never paid specific attention to them - allergies and sneezing!  It's nice looking at it close up for as long as I want without worrying about a sneezing fit!  Keep them comiing.
